Senator Seyarto Proclaims National Crime Victims’ Rights Week
Sacramento, CA – Senator Kelly Seyarto (R-Murrieta) is proud to introduce SCR 36, officially recognizing April 6 through April 12, 2025, as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in California. This week serves as a time to honor and support survivors of crime, amplify their voices, and renew California’s commitment to ensuring victims are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
This year’s theme, “Kinship,” emphasizes the importance of unity and shared responsibility in helping crime victims heal. It serves as a reminder that every member of the community has a role in creating a more supportive environment for those affected by crime.
“While the impact of violent crime is most directly felt by its victims, the ripple effects reach families, neighborhoods, and entire communities,” said Senator Seyarto. “That’s why we must continue to prioritize justice and healing by enforcing victims’ rights, listening to survivors, and ensuring access to the services and support they deserve.”
California has long been at the forefront of victims’ rights advocacy. From establishing the nation’s first crime victim compensation program in 1965 to enshrining victims’ rights in the California Constitution through Proposition 8 (Victims’ Bill of Rights) in 1982, and again reaffirming those protections with Marsy’s Law (Proposition 9) in 2008, the state continues to stand as a national example.
Senator Seyarto was honored to recognize Harriet Salarno, founder of Crime Victims United, along with her daughter Nina, during the resolution’s presentation on the Senate Floor. Salarno’s lifelong advocacy for victims and their families has shaped critical policy advancements across California.
By observing National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, California can restore power to survivors who often feel powerless in the aftermath of a serious crime.
