Staff Report
A Riverside County felon who escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga over the weekend was captured in Los Angeles on Monday, June 17, authorities reported.
Deshaun Maurice Stamps, 29, had been charged last November with attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a peace officer, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. He escaped from the recreation yard on Sunday afternoon, though officials have not disclosed how he managed to do so.
Stamps was apprehended by the Los Angeles Police Department on Monday and is in the process of being transferred back to sheriff’s custody.
Court records indicate that last week, a judge ordered Stamps to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, expressing doubts about his mental competency to stand trial. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 14 for a hearing on the evaluation results.
