This month, utility rates for residents of California could be reduced by up to $175. Who meets the requirements?

STAFF REPORT

According to the California Public Utilities Commission, millions of Californians will receive a $30 to $175 credit on their April electric and natural gas bills.

The California Climate Credit is a component of California’s Cap-and-Trade Program that aims to benefit those with high wintertime natural gas and electric costs while rewarding the majority of electric investor-owned utility customers.

These credits are given to most residents every fall and spring.
Which California power customers fit the bill?
How is the climate credit awarded to you?
This year, qualified power users will get a credit twice. October will see the distribution of another electric credit.

Customers who qualify will receive the credit for natural gas and electricity shown on their utility bills this month. There won’t be another distribution of the natural gas credit in the autumn.

Receiving the credit doesn’t need any action on the part of your household if you qualify.
According to a California Public Utilities Commission FAQ, “Billing periods vary by utility and may not always coincide with a calendar month.”
According to the FAQ, if you don’t notice a credit this month, it should show up on your next power bill.
If it is not visible, get in touch with your utility company.
The commission stated in a fresh announcement regarding the credit in October that “it doesn’t matter how much energy a customer consumes or the amount of their bill.” “The remaining balance will roll forward until the California Climate Credit is used up if the credit is greater than the bill.”

Which electric users are eligible, and what is the maximum credit amount that they can get?

These California energy users are qualified to earn the following credit amount, per the commission’s 2024 schedule:

$55.17 for Pacific Gas and Electric
Edison in Southern California: $86
San Diego Electricity and Gas: $78.22
Electricity in Bear Valley – $32.24
$131.01 is Liberty Utilities.
Pacific power – $174.25
Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, or SMUD, which serves the majority of Sacramento County, is not included.

What is the estimated amount of credit that qualified gas users will get?
This year, the majority of Californians who use natural gas are qualified to obtain the following credit:
PG&E ($85.46)
Gas and Electricity in San Diego: $58.98
– $75.19 Southwest Gas Corporation
Gas Company for Southern California – $73.41
